SUMMARY:Holy Thursday
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to come worship with us as we remember and reflect on the “Last Seven Words” of Christ. Forgiveness\, Salvation\, Relationship\, Abandonment\, Distress\, Triumph and Reunion \nHoly Thursday is the beginning of the most sacred days of the liturgical calendar: The Lord’s Supper\, the Lord’s Passion\, and the Resurrection of the Lord. \nHoly Thursday provides us a perfect opportunity to reflect upon the spiritual meaning of Jesus’ Holy Sacrifice. Our faith teaches us that as the Body of Christ\, we are all unified in this beautiful mystery of our faith:  Christ has Died\, Christ is Risen\, Christ will come again.

SUMMARY:Lost. Devotion by Pastor Richard
DESCRIPTION:Sept. 28\, 2022 \nLost \nHave you ever been truly lost? Have you been in a situation where you were all alone\, in an unfamiliar place and really had no idea about how to find your way home again? In our world today\, it is much easier to find our way around as long as we have some cell service. You just punch in your address and follow the instructions and you can find your way home. I am talking about being really lost and unable to find your way. \nI was in West Palm beach when hurricane Francis hit. After three days of wind and rain we went out driving around to see what damage had been done and to go check out the church and see what kind of shape it was in. I will never forget the disoriented feeling I had when we drove through town and I could not recognize the intersections because of all the downed street signs\, stop lights\, the fallen trees and road debris. Places I should have known were all terribly rearranged. It was the weirdest feeling. I was not sure where I was at times. \nStill\, that lostness is not even close to what our young people are feeling in the world today. Last week I was a part of a short online discussion with a bunch of youth workers and we were discussing Post Pandemic Youth Ministry and this one quote from Springtide Research really made me stop and think: \n\n“Three decades ago\, the gravest public health threats to teenagers in the United States came from binge drinking\, drunken driving\, teenage pregnancy and smoking. These have since fallen sharply\, replaced by a new public health concern: soaring rates of mental health disorders.” Our young people are getting deeper and deeper into crisis mode. Just think about it\, they live in a world that is changing so fast they cannot keep up. They have survived a world-wide pandemic. Every day they face potential violence from gun shootings and bomb threats at their schools. We had several schools shut down last week due to bomb threats here in Cabarrus County. To top all that off\, our young people have exponentially less adults in their lives helping them navigate life. They have very few\, if any adults helping them become adults. They are becoming more lost as suicide rates and violence among teens increase.\n\nI write this to acknowledge their struggles and their reality that most adults have no idea they are experiencing\, and also to say there is hope. The hope is in you adults. They need you like never before. I have repeatedly shared that when we go on trips with children and youth\, we need to have 1 adult for every 5 youth. In order to help a child to become a successful adult\, that figure needs to be the opposite\, 5 trusted adults in a healthy relationship with every single child. According to Springfield research: 1 in 4 young people say they have one or fewer adults in their lives they can turn to if they need to talk. \nWhat will you do? What is God calling you to do? You can help someone one find themselves\, even when you may feel a little overwhelmed and lost yourself. Together\, we can help each other\, but right now\, our young people are in great need. They need adults in their lives! \nPastor Richard \nContact Richard to talk about your opportunities to support our youth \nrsmith@harrisburgumc.org

SUMMARY:Making Sense of the Bible
DESCRIPTION:Adam Hamilton Study\, Begins on Thursday Night\, Sept. 8th at 7 p.m. Room #1 Led by Kara Grosh \nAll are welcome to join this study. \nIn Making Sense of the Bible\, Adam Hamilton invites us into an honest conversation about the Bible. The book begins with foundational questions such as: How and when was the Bible written? Who decided which books made it into the scriptures and why? How literally must we read it? And\, is the Bible ever wrong? \nFrom there\, Hamilton considers the real questions people frequently ask that continue to divide Christians and denominations alike\, including: \n\nWere Adam and Eve real people?\nWhy is God so violent in the Old Testament?\nWhy would Paul command women to keep silent in the church?\nIs Jesus the only way to salvation?\nHow does God view homosexual people?\nIs the Book of Revelation a guide to the End Times\n\nIn approachable and inviting language\, Hamilton addresses these often misunderstood biblical themes leading listeners to a deeper appreciation of the Bible so that we might hear God speak through it and find its words to be life-changing and life-giving.

SUMMARY:Discipleship Devotion
DESCRIPTION:Discipleship \nDevotion by Pastor Richard \nAs the kids return to school\, and we move into the fall season\, now is a great time to establish new patterns and rhythms. For me\, the summer is filled with tons of activity\, youth trips\, vacation bible school\, and yes\, I was even able to sneak a week of vacation in. Now\, in my world things are slowing down once again\, and there are not as many activities. Now is a perfect time for me to re-establish some new habits of personal discipleship. \nDiscipleship will be the focus of Pastor Fredrick’s September sermon series. Discipleship is nothing more than becoming a student of the one whom you choose to follow\, for me that is Jesus. It is interesting that so many people call themselves Christian\, followers of Jesus\, but never really take on the responsibility of discovering who he really is! It is so much more than showing up to church on a Sunday morning! It is a life long journey of study and participation in Jesus’ work. It takes both study and participation! I have met people who love to study\, but then never do anything with what they have learned! I also know people who are so involved in service and doing stuff that they seem not to really know what they do or why they do what they do. \nThe story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 is a great example of both such people. Mary wants to learn\, learn\, learn\, while Martha wants to do\, do\, do! I feel we should be doing both. We need to be learning and growing deeper in our faith and trust of Christ\, while at the same time living out that faith in our daily lives. Yes\, there is a time to focus on one or the other\, but balance is key. \nAfter having been in ministry over the years\, I still learn things about Jesus I had not before\, or someone introduces a new perspective from the scriptures I had never thought about before. Sometimes\, just reading a familiar passage\, the Holy Spirit enlightens my heart and mind with a fresh way of looking at myself\, the world\, or even Jesus! When was the last time you picked up a Bible? When was the last time you attended a Sunday School class or small group study to further your knowledge of Christ? The fall/back to school season is just beginning\, so why not try to establish a new pattern of discipleship for yourself and your family? Maybe you begin by establishing a little prayer and Bible reading corner in your home? It can be as simple as a desk\, chair\, a Bible\, a devotional book and maybe a candle you light during your time of study and prayer to represent the light of Christ that sets that time and place a part for your own personal discipleship space. Figure out what you need to do for yourself to become a more responsible disciple or student of Jesus! \nBlessings! \nPastor Richard

SUMMARY:Real Reward\, Devotion by Pastor Richard
DESCRIPTION:In last week’s devotion I mentioned the success of long-term commitment in a group of young men’s lives. Today I will tell you more about their story…        \n  One Tuesday night we were doing our mentoring thing. We ate dinner\, did homework\, and did our weekly devotion. Normally the boys could hardly sit still for the devotion time because afterwards we got to play basketball and run off a ton of energy. This night was a little different. We started our devotion and a couple of the boys were really being extraordinarily quiet and patient. They seemed to listen more than usual\, and they seemed to have something on their minds. \nAfter we prayed and began to move toward the gym for basketball\, four of the boys pulled me aside and asked me how to join the church. You see\, our goal was never to force Christ or make the kids feel guilty about not being a Christian or being involved in a church\, we just left that part up to God! We just talked about and showed them the love of Jesus through our commitment and actions. Needless to say\, I never expected them to want to join our church! God was moving in their lives\, and we were ready to be a part of their next steps in their faith journeys. These four boys were wanting to respond to the love of Christ they were finding in their lives. So\, I sat down with them and explained the process and asked why they wanted to do this\, all of the appropriate questions about faith in Christ and committing to the church community. I was humbled by their responses and willingness to commit. It was simple\, they were in a place where they were loved and cared for and wanted to remain a part of that community. They also were convinced that the source of that love was in Jesus Christ\, so they were ready! \nSoon enough\, the Sunday morning came that they were to make their profession of faith before the church and then be baptized. At that time I was serving a Baptist church\, and baptism was by immersion\, we had to dunk them all the way under! They requested that I Baptize them\, probably another one of the most humbling times in my ministry. \nNeither I\, nor they\, will forget their next test of their commitment. That cold February morning everything was ready\, except one thing\, the heater had gone out on the baptismal pool. The water temperature may have been fifty degrees! It was crazy cold. It was located on an outside wall of the sanctuary\, and it was nowhere near room temperature. I asked them if they wanted to wait until the next Sunday\, after we had it repaired. In their excitement\, all four kids said no way! We are doing this today! \nThat morning four youth nearly froze to death in declaring their love for Jesus and for that church who literally showed them the transformative love of Jesus. They were so excited about becoming part of the church\, and even more about becoming followers of Jesus. Even a little cold water would not and did not get in their way of adding their voices proclaiming the amazing love of Christ. \nSo\, ask yourself\, where have you seen God lately in your life? Where is He revealing the real reward He has for you? I have no doubt it is there\, you might have to do a little work to discover it! Look for it!

SUMMARY:Commitment and Hard Work\, Devotion by Pastor Richard
DESCRIPTION:Devotion by Pastor Richard \nIt has been a very intense four weeks this past month. I have led two mission trips and have pulled off an incredibly successful VBS with our amazing church and amazing volunteers! There is no way I could do all of that without the help and commitment of strong and dedicated volunteers! Thank you to everyone who had some role in any of those events. Your support and commitment has not gone unnoticed. \nOne of the greatest lessons I learned was on the Middle School mission trip to Wilmington a couple weeks ago\, and it was about how your presence can make all the difference in the world. Many times it is not what you do on these trips\, but the impact you can have on a life or even a community by just showing up. Your presence is so important\, and I know I have written about it before\, but this summer was a reinforcement of its importance. \nIn Wilmington\, my team was assigned to go and clean the backyard of a person who is on the Vigilant Hope missionary team. This gentleman has an amazing story about how God helped him get back on his feet after a life of facing one tragedy after another. His main focus is to minister to the homeless and drug addicted in the city. He had recently bought a house in a very poor part of town\, and needed some young people to help him reclaim his back yard and to build some frames for a raised garden that would provide fresh vegetables for him and his neighbors. \nThe week before we arrived\, he told us that two doors down was a drug dealer’s house. There was a violent event where shots were fired and some of the bullets went into the house across the street just above the couch\, nearly hitting the homeowner. He called the authorities and turned in the dealers and by the time we got there\, the occupants were moving out. As you might expect\, the neighbors had been living in fear and were afraid to even come out of their homes. \nThen we show up\, a group of a dozen middle class kids making all kinds of noise and working incredibly hard on a stranger’s backyard. Before long\, our homeowner noticed one neighbor sitting on their porch that he had not seen in a long while. Then another neighbor\, a young woman\, came by walking her dogs. After that another person walked up and asked us what we were doing and expressed that they were happy that we were there. What I learned was that our little group of noisy and hard-working teenagers actually made the neighborhood safer for the residents who live there. Our physical presence was impacting and changing the neighborhood. We were helping to build community and increasing the safety of the residents just by being there. \nI have participated so many mission trips over the thirty years I have been doing full-time ministry\, never has this idea of just our being present helped me to see the greater impact that we as Christians can have over the world. In so many situations\, people and communities just simply need to know that they are not alone and that there are actually people out there who care for them\, regardless of the differences between races or cultures. Painting a wall or cleaning a yard are important\, but they are not the most significant work.  In just a few days our presence in that Wilmington community made a significant impact. Can you imagine if the church just showed up? Never underestimate the impact you can have on someone just by showing up! \nSee you at church this Sunday! Just show up and impact another person! \nPastor Richard

SUMMARY:Freedom - Devotion by Pastor Richard
DESCRIPTION:Freedom\nDevotion by Pastor Richard \nLast Sunday’s sermon by De Hillyer on July 3 on the topic of freedom in Christ must lead us to responsibility has gotten me to thinking lately about the freedom we have as citizens of the United States and how far we have gotten away from our responsibilities as citizens and as Christ followers. So\, I opened up my Bible to the book of Galatians and really resonated with what Paul says in chapter 5\, verse 13: “For you have been called to live in freedom\, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead\, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” So technically if we are free in Christ\, we are not free to do as we well please\, and look out after our own desires and wants\, but we are free to serve in love! How could life be different for all of us if we took this approach in our politics\, in living in our neighborhoods\, and even working together in our own church? I feel that most of us do not live in freedom\, but live in fear and greed\, which drives us to division and hate of those not like us or those who disagree with us.  \nIn our own United Methodism\, there is great division. When I was in seminary there was great division in the Southern Baptist Convention. To me both are very similar in nature. Groups within the Christian church are fighting for control and power over things that should truly be left to the judgement of God and not people. If we truly followed the freedom that Paul talks about\, our concerns should fall on “serving one another in love\,” period. We should not be seeking power or control\, but serving. Power and control over another person leads directly to oppression\, which is the opposite of the freedom found in Christ. Just ask any woman that was called to serve as a minister in the SBC\, or any female professors that served in the SBC Seminaries in the 1980’s and 1990’s. \nPaul also quotes Jesus directly in the very next verse as a reminder of our role. Verse 14 says: “For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Does that not sound familiar?? It is Jesus’ own words from Matthew 22:39. Paul is telling us that if you aren’t doing whatever it is not out of love\, then you are not living into the freedom that Jesus desires for us.  \nWhen I pay attention to what is going on in our country these days\, I am so saddened by those who call themselves Christians who have seemingly forgotten their freedom to love. What I see is their desire for power and control. So\, let’s strive to be different. Let’s live into that true freedom that God is calling us. Let’s once again begin to seek what is best for our neighbor\, not out of our own interest\, but out of what Christ is most interested in\, service and love. \nYou are free! \nPastor Richard

SUMMARY:In Between - Devo by Pastor Richard
DESCRIPTION:The In-Between\nDevotion by Pastor Richard\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo you ever have those times in your life when you feel everything is in flux and nothing can be resolved? It is a time when you know things will sort themselves out\, but you just have this desire to finish something so you have some closure and then can move on to the next thing. It is that feeling that there is something caught in the flow of your life routine and it is causing a dam to form\, and all you want to do is get the flow going again. Do you ever have those feelings? \nFor me personally right now\, I am headed into the busiest time of my church season. I have two week long summer mission trips\, Vacation Bible School\, lots of bases to cover Sunday mornings in children’s ministries\, youth Summer Sunday School\, weekly youth events\, fun summer events\, a pastoral change\, and that is just the church stuff. At home we are still in limbo over our flooring struggles\, dealing with poor customer service\, preparing for a week-long vacation and family wedding\, and on top of that my kid is coming to visit the week after we get back from the vacation. \nDo not get me wrong\, I am not complaining\, I am excited about all these things happening\, but right now I am at a point of let’s get things going! Once things do get going it is going to be a whirlwind of a summer! It is like waiting for that hurricane to come. When I was in Florida\, hurricanes were a big deal. We had four direct hits on our home. We would watch the weather reports for ten days out or better. Then the storm would hit\, and then we would access the damage and get to work on the clean-up. The worst part of all that for me was the actual day or two before the storm hit\, the waiting. \nI hate waiting. I know what is coming\, and I know what I need to do to get ready\, and then I just have to wait. I get impatient. I am probably a little more crabby than usual (hard to believe\, I know!). I am just ready to get on with the next thing. Well\, Jesus has some advice for me\, and you if you feel this way too. He is famous for telling people to just wait. \nI am thinking of that early body of followers that is left after Jesus is crucified and later resurrected. There has to have been so much emotional and mental energy and feelings in that body of believers. There had to be a great fear of their personal safety\, because they knew they all had targets on their backs from their own religious system. They were also super-charged emotionally as they were first hand witnesses to God’s power in the resurrection. Through all of their experiences with Jesus they had become a super tight community. They also found themselves in a period of waiting. Acts 1:4 says: “ Once when he was eating with them\, he commanded them\, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised\, as I told you before.” \nSo\, what are they doing during this time of waiting? They are meeting together\, praying together\, and eating together as they wait in Jerusalem for the next God movement. Maybe that is what I should be doing before the busy summer hits\, praying and waiting on the Lord. It is something I have a hard time doing\, but it is necessary for all of us to remember that between the busyness of days\, our refreshment comes in those times when we need to wait for what God is going to do next. Waiting can be good for us. It may not be fun\, but if during the times of waiting we turn our minds and hearts towards God\, then we will be ready for what comes next! \nOn the journey\, one day at a time! \nPastor Richard

SUMMARY:What will it take for us to Change?
DESCRIPTION:What Will It Take for Us to Change?? \nDevotion by Pastor Richard \nThis morning my mind and heart are filled with so many emotions and thoughts about shooting at Robb Elementary yesterday. To be honest\, I am struggling to figure out what God wants to say to me and through me in relation to yesterday’s inexcusable tragedy. So\, to be clear the following thoughts are my personal thoughts and feelings coming out of my relationship with Christ and what I believe God is about. Some of you may not agree with some of this\, but that is okay\, God’s love is bigger than any difference of opinion. \nI could talk about the issue of gun control or lack thereof. I could talk about the issue of lack of mental health care\, especially for those most vulnerable. I could talk about our children and youth who are now being tagged as the generation living in fear. Can you imagine? Being the generation known as the fearful ones? They fear out of control politics and government\, worldwide instability\, rampant climate change\, incredible family and community instability\, then you throw on a pandemic that took a million American lives on top of everything. Plus\, on top of all that\, they have instant access to every horrible event at the tips of their fingers\, or at the command of their voice. Can you blame them for being a little afraid? \nNope\, I am feeling the need to talk about responsibility. We are at times\, the most irresponsible collection of people. We allow senseless tragedies to happen and instead of trying to do something to prevent the next one. We just sit back and wait for the next one to happen. Then we wonder why and we point fingers at everyone else and blame them for some kind of failure\, real or imagined. This happens over and over again. Very few step up and actually say that something must change. \nWhat must change is that we all must take responsibility for ourselves and for those around us. I work with children and teens\, and it is a never-ending battle to get them to pick up a piece of trash someone else left behind. Their answer is always\, “that’s not mine!” or “I didn’t do\, so why should I be held responsible?” After thirty years of hearing those responses\, they do not hold weight with me anymore. Same thing applies to our day to life and culture. My response to my youth these days is\, “yes\, it IS your responsibility\, you live here too do you not?” Guess what? I am beginning to see change in their behavior. Small changes\, but I see them becoming more responsible for themselves and even becoming more responsible for one another by holding their peers accountable for their actions. \nJesus calls us to action. He tells us directly and without any hidden meaning that we are to do two things\, love God and love our neighbors. When we as a collective do not move\, then we are not living into what Christ intends us to become. When we try to find blame somewhere else we are not living into our God given potential. When we remain complacent and fail to fight for justice and fail to fight for our own children\, and prefer to sit back and blame the government\, or the video games\, or the weapons manufacturing\, or the lack of mental healthcare\, or even the lack of plain and simple caring for our neighbor\, then we must head back and spend time at the foot of the cross once again where His blood can wash away our sins\, again. \nPastor Richard

SUMMARY:Racism - Never Part of God's Creation
DESCRIPTION:If you hate another person period\, then you had better stop reading now. Hate\, as is love\, are both choices we make. One is of God\, and the other is not. Then when we start making choices to hate people based on skin color\, or ethnicity\, or where someone was born\, or whatever the generalization we conjure up\, then we are not where God intends for us to be. As I write this\, I am well aware that there is already so much out there pointing this very issue out. The hurtful thing is that so many are still not paying attention and giving into hate. I am exhausted by this. \nRacism has been a part of my family history. It has been part of my childhood. It has been a part of my international experience. It was a part of my Ordination process. It is even a part of my community today. I get so tired of all the hate based on people and facts we do not know or have experience. We just assume we know what a person is like by the way they look\, and we decide we do not like them or even hate them without even knowing who they are\, or what they are about. \nI worked in a church in southern Indiana when I was in seminary and was going through the first part of the process of ordination in another denomination called “License to Preach the Gospel.” It is the first step in a church’s recognition of an individual’s vocational call by God into the ministry. There is an interview process where they are supposed to ask you questions about your faith and basic theology. My interview during this process was about whether or not I would perform a marriage of a racially mixed couple if it went against the wishes of church leadership. There was no conversation about my love of Jesus and commitment to Him and nothing about how I was feeling about being Called into vocational ministry. I was disgusted and heart broken at the same time for the lack of love and the amount of hate that the body of believers had for their fellow man. Needless to say\, my tenure at the church was short lived. I was actually shocked by the response of those in that interview. \nIn Brazil\, I experienced racism based not on major differences in skin color alone\, but on shades of brown. I could not figure out which specific shade of darker brown became the hated nemesis of those who were lighter brown. \nDuring my pre-teen years\, we bought a home in Charlotte and the previous owners were Jewish. They were moving because the neighbors had been burning crosses into the yard\, and had been sending the anonymous nasty letters for being Jewish. \nThe point is\, racism is horrible. Hatred of other people is also horrible. Hating the actions of someone else is much different from hating the person. Most of us truly have no real reason to hate another person. Sure\, most of us have had bad people doing something bad to us at some point\, but that is still no reason to hate the individual or a whole group of people based on some physical similarity. If that was true\, there would be no one to love that could fit those qualifications! Forgiveness is a basic tenant of the Christian faith. \nJesus is incredibly clear in the Scriptures that our call is to love\, not to judge and not to hate. Matthew 22:37-40 tells us that we are to love God and love our neighbors\, and that everything God intends hangs on those demands of love. Jesus then defines who our neighbor is in Luke 10:25 -37 in the story of the Good Samaritan. We have no excuse at all to be racist. We have the command to go and love\, EVERYONE! Until we can get that figured out\, our faith will make no real difference in the world we live in. \nJust in case you did not know where I am on the issue of race\, you do now. I am not perfect\, but I am learning more about myself and about others every day. I am becoming more aware of my own attitudes and thoughts when it comes to assumptions and presuppositions about others around me. I do believe it is what Christ expects\, and that is for all of us to grow and change\, and to follow Him. \nPastor Richard

SUMMARY:Change part 2
DESCRIPTION:Change Part 2\nDevotion by Pastor Richard\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis week my wife and I are having new flooring put in throughout our whole house! Every room gets a new floor! We knew it would be a multi-day process\, and we knew it would be a little messy. We prepared the whole week before by moving and packing breakables. I packed and moved my whole library\, which filled about fifteen boxes and our garden tub in our bathroom. We moved everything we could to the garage so that the workers could get in and be as quick as possible to get the job done. We are so excited! \nThen\, yesterday construction\, or actually destruction began in a flurry. The current flooring had to be torn up and removed before the installers put down the new floor. What a mess! Part of the flooring came up very easily\, while the old linoleum in the kitchen took hours to remove. After that\, installation went into full swing. After the workers finished about 6:30 pm last night\, they had completed maybe 40% of the house. They swept and kind of cleaned up so we could live in the house overnight\, but there was still debris\, nails\, trash\, and an inch of dust throughout the whole house. It was a mess!!! \nI tell this story to remind us that God has incredible plans for us as Christians and for us a church full of believers. Change and transition can be challenging and difficult. It may require a little removal of old things to prepare the way for new things. It may mean letting go of some comfortable ways so that may become more effective in what God is calling us to become. Change can be a little messy. None of us knows what the outcome will be. I was not even sure how well the coloring of the floor would match the cabinets in the kitchen! But\, for my house there is no going back\, the investment has been made! \nSometimes for God to continue His work in us there needs to be some mess made so that the next construction project for spiritual growth can happen for us. Most of the time God is probably telling us to just have a little faith and more than a little patience through the process\, everything will be amazing because God is in all of it! It will all be a part of the story we will share together and talk about the next time we face a big change! \nOn the Journey with you! \nPastor Richard \nProverbs 3:5-6 \nTrust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him\, and he will make your paths straight.
