SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:Ash Wednesday\, February 17\, 2021\nThis year Ash Wednesday will look a little different than normal. We are preparing a worship service that will be made available on Facebook and YouTube by 6am on Ash Wednesday morning. We invite you to carve out 30 minutes in your day\, anytime that works best for you alone or you with your family\, to worship as you begin the Lenten Season. \nIn lieu of finding a way to get ashes to everyone\, we are going back to the very beginning and remembering that that call of Ash Wednesday is to remember that you are mortal\, created by God from the dirt of the earth and to dirt we will all return one day. We are creatures\, not God\, and as such we are prone to sin and frailty. This year we remember by inviting you to bring some dirt from around your own home into your worship on Ash Wednesday to mark yourself with the sign of the cross and remember. \nJoin us as we seek to begin a holy Lent rending our hearts and remembering the covenant God has made with us.

SUMMARY:Theology Fight Club
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join HUMC’s theology small group to discuss our next book\, For the Life of the World: Theology That Makes a Difference\, by Miroslav Volf and Matthew Croasmun. The book is available in hardcover or on your device.\n\nFrom the publisher:\n\nThe question of what makes life worth living is more vital now than ever. In today’s pluralistic\, postsecular world\, universal values are dismissed as mere matters of private opinion\, and the question of what constitutes flourishing life–for ourselves\, our neighbors\, and the planet as a whole–is neglected in our universities\, our churches\, and our culture at large. Although we increasingly have technology to do almost anything\, we have little sense of what is truly worth accomplishing.\n\nIn this provocative new contribution to public theology\, world-renowned theologian Miroslav Volf and Matthew Croasmun explain that the intellectual tools needed to rescue us from our present malaise and meet our new cultural challenge are the tools of theology. A renewal of theology is crucial to help us articulate compelling visions of the good life\, find our way through the maze of contested questions of value\, and answer the fundamental question of what makes life worth living.\n\nWe will be meeting on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month at 9:00 pm\, starting February 1st. The Zoom ID is 840 0375 9934.\n\nIf you have any questions\, please contact Pastor Wes.

SUMMARY:Art of Creation
DESCRIPTION:Our members are blessed with a great diversity of creative gifts so we are inviting you to find inspiration in God’s Word and to share your talents! Here’s how you can participate:\n\nRead Genesis 1:1-2:4 prayerfully looking for where God speaks to or inspires your creativity and choose just a few verses to use as your inspiration. Using your God given gifts create a piece of art that conveys the events or meaning of your chosen scripture. You may use any medium you chose – drawing\, painting\, fabric art\, quilting\, knitting/crochet\, beading/jewelry making\, woodwork\, metal work…use your imagination and various skills. We want to see all those hidden talents!\n\nAny project submitted will become part of an auction to support missions. Please let Pastor Toni Ruth know by November 1 that you will be submitting a piece of art for this series.  We will want to know your inspiration verses and what medium you will use.  The projects do not need to be completed until January 1\, 2021.\n\nJanuary 2021 seems a long way off\, but we want you to have plenty of time to create your art pieces. When we preach the series “The Art of Creation”\, your art will be displayed in the church for all to enjoy. At the end of the series\, we will hold the auction for missions. We can’t wait to see how God inspires you!\n\n\n\nREGISTER TO PARTICIPATE

SUMMARY:Serenading our Seniors
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE REGISTER HERE IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO SING\nWe need voices\, lots of voices\nSerenading our Seniors Phase 2\nAugust 26th 6:00-8:00 (meet at the church at 5:45)\n\nWe had such a great time going out to sing to our members in June that we are doing it again! We are aware that many of our older members are taking appropriate measures to ensure their safety in the time of coronavirus by staying home. Since it is harder for them to get out\, we are bringing the church to them. Serenading our Seniors will work like Christmas Caroling\, but instead of singing Christmas songs we’ll be singing beloved hymns to offer love and encouragement. We’ll be honoring physical distancing and staying outside the whole time and wearing masks.  You don’t have to have a great voice\, just a desire to fellowship and spread some joy.\n\nWe need to know how many singers we will have so that we can split people up into small groups to go out singing. Please register below to let us know you would like to be part of the fun.\n\nSeniors\, we’ll be calling to let you know that we are headed your way so that you don’t miss out on the fun. Stay tuned and feel free to shoot us a message if you’d like to be included on our visit list!

SUMMARY:Theology One discussion
DESCRIPTION:Starting on Monday\, August 17th\, 9 a.m. the HUMC Theology Fight Club\, small group\, will be begin discussing The Cross and the Lynching Tree by James Cone.  \nHere’s the summary from the Amazon page\, which says it much better than I can: “The cross and the lynching tree are the two most emotionally charged symbols in the history of the African American community. In this powerful new work\, theologian James H. Cone explores these symbols and their interconnection in the history and souls of black folk. Both the cross and the lynching tree represent the worst in human beings and at the same time a thirst for life that refuses to let the worst determine our final meaning. While the lynching tree symbolized white power and black death\, the cross symbolizes divine power and black life – God overcoming the power of sin and death. For African Americans\, the image of Jesus\, hung on a tree to die\, powerfully grounded their faith that God was with them\, even in the suffering of the lynching era.”  \nWe will be meeting via Zoom # 840 0375 9934 to discuss this important and challenging book. We hope that you can join us! \nIf you have any questions\, please feel free to contact Pastor Wes. \nGrace and Peace\, Wes Smith

SUMMARY:Back Pack Blessing
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s invited to join us for the Blessing of the Back Packs\n\nI know this is going to be one exceptionally trying school years for you and your families as we continue to struggle dealing with the virus. It seems that everything is in constant change and flux. Hang in there\, and know that we are praying for you and will continue to support you in any way we can.\nThis year we are planning a special back to school Blessing of the BackPacks on August 16. We recognize that going back to school is going to be a lot different and very on comfortable this year. We are going to do two things this year\,  a blessing of the backpacks during the August 16th service\, and a “Drive-Thru Blessing” that afternoon at 4 pm- 5 pm at the church.\n\nAs for the morning service\, we would like for you to send us a photo of your child holding their back pack and we are going to make a video collage to show during the service. Please send your picture to Sarah Barclay by August 12 to sarah.podd@gmail.com\n\nAs for the afternoon event\, the pastors will be at the church in the parking lot to deliver a blessing on you and your children as you remain in your car. It will be a drive thru\, one family at a time. Each child will receive an item that will help them to remember that God is always with them\, even in times of change and uncertainty.\nIf you have any questions\, please feel free to contact Richard.\nBlessings\, Richard

SUMMARY:Communion Service
DESCRIPTION:Prayer and Communion\nSunday\, August 2nd\, 8:00 pm\n\nStarting on Sunday\, August 2nd at 8:00 pm\, we will be offering outdoor prayer and communion on the first Sunday of each month. These past few months have been challenging for us in so many ways and while we are not able to gather in the sanctuary for worship\, we wanted to offer this opportunity to gather safely and receive the Lord’s Supper. We will be meeting in the grassy area behind the sanctuary\, with appropriate spacing. Masks will be required for everyone.\n\nDue to the space available and the need for social distancing\, registration is required with a maximum of 25 participants. If you are not able to register to attend in-person or if you would feel more comfortable staying in your vehicle\, we will be offering communion to those who are in their cars in the parking lot as well. If you have any questions\, please contact Pastors Wes or Toni Ruth.\n\nRegister here

DESCRIPTION:Book Club meeting dates:\nJuly 14\, 21\, and 28\, 10 a.m.\nZoom ID: 848-9159-8689\n\nThe book we’re reading is “I’m Still Here” by Austin Channing Brown. It is available on Kindle\, Nook\, Audible\, and in hardback (Amazon has it). This is a memoir about race in America. My hope is that we can start listening to different voices and be willing to hear things we may need to hear in our day.  Instead of meeting once to discus\, we will cover a few chapters at a time so we can digest and talk.\n\nThe plan is as follows:\n\nJuly 14 – Chapter 1 though 1st Interlude (“Why I love being a black girl”)\nJuly 21 – Chapter 6 through 2nd Interlude (“How to survive racism in an organization)\nJuly 28 – Chapter 10 -14\n\n\n\nEven if you’ve never joined us for Bible Study\, you are welcome to jump in and read with us! We’d love to have your voice in the conversation. If you have questions or concerns let me know!\n\nIn God’s Peace\,\nToni Ruth

SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday
DESCRIPTION:Lent is the 40 days\, not counting Sundays\, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Historically\, the church has celebrated Lent since the 6th century and did so by calling for a period of fasting and reflection. Christians are called to reflect upon their own morality \, on their sins and on God’s grace. It is a time of self denial to help us to remember that Christ denied Himself for us. \nAsh Wednesday begins Lenten season. On Ash Wednesday\, we are reminded of our morality and urged to confess our sins before God. The use of ashes applied to our heads acts to remind us that from the dust we are formed and to the dust we will return. Furthermore\, the use of ashes has been a sign of repentance and mourning over sins since Biblical times. \nAsh Wednesday Worship Wednesday\, Feb. 26th\, at 6:30 in the Sanctuary.

SUMMARY:Join us on a Mission Project
DESCRIPTION:The missions team is planning a missions event February 22 at the Community CPR ministry in Whiteville\, NC.  (CPR connecting people and resources)  We will be organizing their warehouse\, possibly do a little painting in a workshop there on site\, and making a few deliveries. We plan to leave the church by 7 am and drive to Whiteville and  returning to Harrisburg by 7:30 pm. The missions team will provide sandwiches and chips for lunch.  Feel free to bring drinks and snacks. We will provide bottled water. \n  \nCommunity CPR Ministry\nFebruary 22 nd  7:00am – 7:30pm\nWe will meet at the church at 7:00 am\, drive to Whiteville to serve for the day and return home by 7:30 pm. We will be carpooling down together.\nAll ages welcome.\nPlease let us know you will be joining us by signing up on the sign up genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E084BA9A722A3FC1-community1 .\n\nAbout Community CPR\nCommunity CPR is a nonprofit organization in Whiteville\, NC founded by Rev. Toni Ruth Smith’s cousin\, Wallyce Todd\, after Hurricane Matthew as a way of addressing unmet needs in the rural Columbus County. CCPR continued to grow after Hurricane Florence – although its work has grown to encompass helping people with many of life’s crises and disasters (fire\, flood\, domestic violence and other displacement issues). They are a partner organization of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)\n\nCPR in the name stands for Connecting People and Resources\, which is exactly what the organization does:\n\nAs Wallyce Todd has explained: “There were needs that weren’t being met\, gaps that were not getting filled – and lots of it had to do with the absence of effective communication and intentional teamwork. Community CPR was created to stand in some of the gaps within our community. And to be a model for how other rural counties could address disaster and crisis-level community needs.”\n\nKnown for its warehouse in Whiteville (210 E. Walter St.)\, the community quickly became aware of making donations there as well as receiving home goods and furniture during times of crisis or disaster. The organization can provide safe drinking water through a state-of-the-art filtration system as well as providing other material needs such as clothing\, diapers\, baby formula\, wheelchairs and more. But it’s also a safe and inviting place for clients to meet one-on-one with a case worker or volunteer to assess an issue and look at a myriad of resources CCPR can tap to assist.\n\n“We do everything we can to help our clients\,” said Wallyce. “We share other helpful resources offered by other nonprofits\, worship centers\, government agencies\, etc. When we can\, we make phone calls\, send emails and make visits – all in an effort to connect people with the resources they need. We could not do any of this without our dedicated team of donors and volunteers. It truly is our mission to be #neighborshelpingneighbors… people who choose to be examples of ‘love with boots on the ground\,'” she said.
