Anxiousness

Before Covid hit, anxiety in our country had already been significantly increasing year after year. It is very visible in young adults trying to navigate their way into adulthood and post college employment. It is also prevalent in people living on the margins of our society, whether it be financially, culturally, or even racially. Anxiety is affecting more and more of our lives everyday. In our young people and even in our children, I personally have noticed increased levels over the past decade in working with the younger age groups.
There are different levels of anxiety, and there are different methods of dealing with it. The more severe cases can be treated with medication, while lower levels can be dealt with changes of habits, counseling or other means of mental or emotional therapy. Regardless, anxiety is on the increase and its results can turn day to day life upside down.
So, what does this have to with Jesus and the Scriptures? Well this week at youth group we took a look at Matthew 6:25-34, where Jesus preaches about not worrying. For many of us that is much easier said than done! Jesus’ point is that constant worry and stress drives us away from God’s purposes for us and leads us into shallower waters with God, because our attention is focused more on ourselves and on things beyond our control. Let me make it clear that Jesus is saying that we should not be in any way concerned about things like food and clothing, he knows we all need to be productive people and that we do need to have responsibility for our own well-being. What he is trying to tell us all is that there is much more to life than worrying ourselves sick over things that we need to simply trust God for and even trust ourselves to be able to overcome.
Jesus is reminding us that we are an important part of God’s incredible creation. God loves and cares for all of His creation, and just as He cares for the birds of the air, then how much more will He care for us, humanity, created in His own image?? We get so caught up in ourselves and in our own pursuits that we move ourselves out of that communion with God. There is so much more to this world than to be constantly worrying about things we have no or very little control over. Be concerned about yourself and be responsible for self-care, but also look toward God with your needs and concerns. Maybe what you really need to get you out of your worry rut is already there waiting for you to take your eyes off of yourself and look deeply into the eyes of the one who loves you the most!

Christmas Eve Offering

Justice Ministries – A Rescue Mission in the Fight Against Human Trafficking

This year the Missions Team has proposed that all offerings collected will go to fight human trafficking through a local non-profit, in the middle of the fight, team of courageous Christians willing to take a stand against one of the most horrifying forms of modern day slavery. Jesus calls us to shine a light in the darkness and by supporting the folks at Justice Ministries we can add to that light and be a apart of some wonderful work being done in our own community. Their  mission statement is “Justice Ministries is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization committed to combating sex trafficking and sexual exploitation of women, with a focus on rescue and housing. Our goal is to locate victims of sex trafficking and sexual exploitation, help them get out of their situation and into a safe place, facilitate an environment conducive to healing, and assist them in their transition to independence.” They rescue trapped victims, find protected housing for them and their families, and seek and provide care for recovery. Please prayerfully consider supporting Justice Ministries, Christmas eve through your Christma offering. You can learn more at www.justiceministries.org.

Christmas Eve Worship

Christmas Eve is a special time for the People of God as we hear again the joyful news of the birth of our Savior and celebrate the faithfulness of God. Harrisburg UMC offer three services of worship on Christmas Eve, each designed to allow you and yours to hear the story and remember the promise.

5:00 pm  Worship around the Manger

A service for families with preschool aged children, this 30 minute services invites us into the story of Christmas in word and song that any age will enjoy.  We share the Lord’s Supper together and lift the glowing light of God’s love to the world.

7:00 pm A Service of Candlelight and Communion

This traditional service of worship invites the whole family to hear and celebrate the Christmas Good News.  We celebrate communion and sing with the Heavenly Hosts!

Nursery care is provided for those under 3.

11:00 pm Quite Candlelight Communion

All the hubbub is stilled, children are tucked in bed, and the silence of this night descends.  This quiet service invites you to ponder the mystery of this holy night as we hear the story and break bread together.

Stephen Ministry

Stephen Ministry

From time to time we all go through difficult times when we could use a little support and help to get through.  Having someone to listen with compassion and offer support can be a difference makerThat’s one reason why Stephen Ministry is at Harrisburg UMC.

Stephen Ministry is a system of caring ministry where members of a congregation are specially trained to provide one-to-one care to people who are facing a difficult or challenging time in their lives.  Stephen Ministry St Louis, a non-profit ministry organization headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri, is a transdenominational ministry that maintains a support network to Stephen Ministry congregations in the US, Canada, and 30 other countries around the world.  It is a distinctively Christiancaring ministry in which pastors and lay people work together to meet the needs of people within the church and community who are experiencing a wide range of life circumstances.

The team of people who direct Stephen Ministry at Harrisburg UMC are called Stephen Leaders and were trained at a 7-day Leader’s Training Course taught by members of the Stephen Ministry Organization. Our current Stephen Leaders are Pastor Toni Ruth Smith, Pastor Richard Smith, Sandra Bilbro and John Lomonaco.

Lay caregivers, called Stephen Ministers, who have spiritual gifts appropriate for caring ministry are trained by our Stephen Leaders. Stephen Ministers receive 50 hours of training, learning principles and skills that equip them to provide high-quality, Christ-centered emotional and spiritual care to others.  Through training, they also gain insight into the thoughts, feelings, and actions of people who are hurting.  For whom are Stephen Minister’s trained to provide care?  Stephen Ministers care for people experiencing grief, separation or divorce, job related stress or loss, chronic or terminal illness, relocation, unplanned pregnancy, infertility, birth of a child, loneliness, military deployment, spiritual struggles and much more

Our Stephen Ministers provide one-to-one, Confidential, Christ-centered care to help people, called Care Receivers, through many of life’s issues whether in times of transition or major life crises.  Stephen Ministers meet with their Care Receiver on a weekly basis in a private, confidential setting to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support.

The joy that motivates our Stephen Ministers to commit to this ministry is based on serving Christ with their best gifts.  Our entire Stephen Ministry team is committed to helping individuals experience the support and concern they need for as long as they need it.  Through our commitment to care, it is our prayer that the hurting and vulnerable among us will experience the hope and healing that Jesus Christ offers.
